Phishing Scam Alert Online
Be careful when talking to strangers.
Technology allows us to talk to friends, family, and relatives from different generations. It also helps us grow our circle of friends. Unfortunately, some strangers do not need your company but have another motive -- to scam.
As various social media platforms support messaging, there are uncountable phishing scams online, such as rental emails, fake images, blackmail, and other ways. Though the government has informed about the different types of scams reported, scammers always came up with new ideas to scam people. But why are these scams are pretty convincing?
Similar to what happened to a Singaporean female, Glennice Tong, who received a concerning message on Instagram. A stranger told her that someone secretly shared her photos in a private telegram group through messaging. That was concerning, and according to Glennice, it was a pretty convincing story.
Glennice replied to the scammer, thanked but she’s suspecting, and asked for a screenshot of the images of her on the private telegram group, but it responded as “I don’t because I reported it already.” The scammer added that somebody posted her mirror shots, chats, and sensitive details. Due to this, she told the scammer that she would report it to the police. But, the scammer didn’t stop there.
Again, the scammer started another conversation and said that her photos were still circulating online. The members of the private telegram created a new group and gave Glennice a link to view her images shared, which requires her phone number, email, and password to proceed.
On the other hand, Glennice faked her number, entered the external site, told the scammer she couldn’t proceed and took a screenshot. The scammer explained that she could not proceed as it was a fake number and explained she would receive an SMS with a code and that code would be her password to the external link but didn’t give in to the scam. She reported it to the police on the same day it happened. Because of her encounter, she warned other girls about scammers and why they are pretty convincing through a TikTok video.
