The Singapore Heartlands: Shopping
The “heartlands” refers to suburban Singapore where a majority of the population live.
In this series, we will divert your attention from the world-famous tourist spots to little-known gems in Singapore’s heartlands. First in this series is shopping in the heartlands.
True that during the pandemic, online shopping has taken front and centre, given the mobility restrictions. However, the little shopping kiosks in the heartlands have slowly reopened – as have several heartland malls.
Queensway Shopping Centre
An old shopping centre that gives you an early 90s feel, Queensway Shopping Centre actually houses a lot of sporting goods and apparels at incredibly competitive prices. True, they may be last season’s stocks, but there is something for every member of the family.
If you are looking for trophy engraving and bookbinding services, they have it too. And of course, the food. Most people drop by Queensway Shopping Centre for their laksa.
Queensway Shopping Centre is located a 1 Queensway, Singapore 149053. Nearest MRT station is Queenstown or Redhill. If you know where Ikea at Alexandra Road is, it is right around that area.
Tampines Mall houses both local and global brands, sporting good shops, and cinemas. A fashion and lifestyle hub in the heartlands, it also has a wide variety of restaurants and food to choose from.
Tampines Mall is not at all difficult to find. It is located near the Tampines Bus Exchange and Tampines MRT Station at 4 Tampines Central 5, Singapore 529510. It is open daily from 10am to 10pm.
However, note that because of the pandemic, entrance to the mall is only limited to the main entrance near Tampines MRT station.
Another one of Singapore “major” suburban malls in Northpoint City, located at... you guessed it, the north part of Singapore.
True to most heartland shopping experience, Northpoint City houses both local and global brands, electronic stores, jewellery shops, and of course restaurants and kopitiams.
Nee Soon Central Community Centre is located at the mall’s south wing and Yishun Public Library is nearby.
Northpoint City is located at 930 Yishun Avenue 2, Singapore 769098. It is open daily from 10.30am-10.30pm.
JEM is one of the crowns of Jurong East, in addition to IMM, Jcube and Westgate. This is Singapore’s third largest suburban shopping mall, with a wide retail space and a variety of shopping options. This includes local and international brands such as Tissot, Uniqlo, Kinokuniya and more. You can find health, beauty and wellness shops here as well.
If you want to catch a movie, there’s Cathay Cineplex; and of course, a host of food and beverage options to tempt you.
JEM is located at 50 Jurong Gateway Road, Singapore 608549 and is open daily from 10am-10pm.
