Rice takes a lot of time to grow. It relies on the weather conditions, requires a lot of water and space inland too. In a country like Singapore due to the area and weather conditions, it is hard to locally produce rice but now, with the help of technology, a small space will be enough.

On February 12, in the morning, a rice harvesting ceremony was held in Tampines Blk 146 along with the Tampines GRC Advisers. This movement is part of the Tampines Town Council to be part of Tampines Goes Farming in 2022. During the ceremony, the GRC Parliament threshed the rice to loosen the rice grain from the stalks. Planting the rice in a vertical garden is now made possible with the hard work of the Temasek Foundation and Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory. It can be harvested in four months' time, which is shorter than the natural growth on land.

For now, the rice that was harvested is not yet ready for consumption and will be forwarded to the laboratory for research and development purposes. But, sooner or later, there will be a locally produced Temasek Rice. On the other hand, the Temasek Life Sciences laboratory was the first laboratory that conducted a trial of growing rice at Lim Chu Kang.

Threshing is a traditional way to remove rice grains using impact or force.

According to Koh Poh Koon, a Member of the Tampines GRC said that the vertical farm in Tampines is a pilot project which supports Singapore’s 30 by 30 goal that will supply 30% of the nation’s nutritional needs in 2030.”

“To grow rice, we just need technology and unutilized HDB space (which in this case is the external wall facade of an HDB block), “ he added.

Temasek Rice is a variety of rice that can survive in drought weather, at least 2 weeks without water, high yield, and disease resistance. It is a semi-dwarf rice variety that is sold in various supermarkets in Singapore. The grains are described as a combination of white and brown rice.
