Movies Set in Singapore Part 1
Let’s face it, Singapore is really pretty. Not surprisingly, there are several films set in this nation-state.
Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians (2018) was mostly shot in Singapore – who could forget? The icon Gardens by the Bay and the Supertrees were front and centre in that movie.
Crazy Rich Asians starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding (and of course THE Michelle Yeoh) was a commercial success and put Singapore on the map (especially for those who still can’t differentiate between Singapore and Hong Kong – yes, there are those people).
But did you know that there are other films set in Singapore too? These are worth watching, so make sure you list them down.
Let’s start with films released from the 2000s to present day:
Hitman: Agent 47
A 2015 American action thriller, Hitman starred Rupert Friend as Agent 47, a genetically enhanced super-soldier. Keep your eyes peeled for the Robinson Road action scene, filmed near the famous Lau Pa Sat hawker centre.
The beauty of Parkroyal on Pickering was also on full display in this film
Also released in 2015, Equals starred Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. This science fiction romantic drama is absolutely worth the watch. These two main actors are superb, no woner they’re one of the best of their generation.
The film is set in a futuristic utopian dystopia. Among the familiar sights you’ll be able to spot are the Henderson Waves (absolutely futuristic) and Marina Barrage.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Released in 2007 is the 3rd installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series with Captain Jack Sparrow (THE Johnny Depp), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightly) in another adventure.
This is however a fictionalised version of old Singapore, which is radically different from the actual historical lion city. Though the sets for the bathhouse, harbor, and stilt houses were constructed at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
